So that is what it is called. i have seen a number of them in past travels. this one was in the stone littered beach near the Cape of good hope in South Africa. 

Merriam-Webster defines it as a heap of stones piled up as a memorial or as a landmark. That is, they have been traditionally used to mark paths to safety. Or were used to mark burial sites. At least in the olden times. 

So they do serve a purpose after all and are not just for aesthetics.
