Masada is an ancient fortress located in Israel’s Judean desert overlooking the Dead Sea. It is about 58 meters above sea level although the cliffs rise up to 450 meters. You have 2 options to go up and down – via a cable car or a long winding path. It was built around 30 B.C. and includes the ruins of King Herod’s Palace.
While on top of the mesa, you can get a sense of how powerful King Herod would have felt when looking over his domain. At the same time though, i get a sense of desolation and despair when you realise how easily things could go wrong if you are not able to control the base of your kingdom. I couldn’t help but marvel as well as to how ingenious man really is. To be able to build a palace and make a dwelling on a plateau, several hundred meters high. the logistics of moving up building materials must have been a real challenge.
