i would often come across ads for used (aka preloved) cars indicating that they have been lady driven. since it is specifically mentioned, i assume that is supposed to be a good thing.
perhaps the key word here is “lady” which according to mr. webster is a woman of superior social position or a woman of refinement and gentle manners. so, by association, the lady driver is a careful driver, both on the road and with the car she drives around. a driver who splurges on her car, agreeing to any recommendations from the mechanic in terms of car maintenance.
today though, i saw a note plastered at the back of a car saying “new lady driver”. this one though can go either way. it can be that the lady driver is bound to go slower than usual or it could also mean someone who are bound to switch lanes at a moment’s notice (think: fickle-minded).
while i don’t really have hard numbers at my disposal nor can i claim 100% accuracy, i am going by my powers of observation based on my number of years on the road.
often, when driving, i would in fact see women who would be more aggressive in driving. weaving in and out of traffic, disregarding solid yellow lines, flattening the pedal as if the weight of the world was on their foot and other unladylike behaviour. on the other side of the coin would also be women who drive like grandmas who left behind their eyeglasses, mindless of the honking of other cars to speed up and with their eyes on the road. there are also those who seem to think that the white lane will need to be right in the middle of the car, never mind if they are occupying almost the entire road and thereby converting a 2-lane road into a single lane one.
and do i even have to mention parking at this point?
but then again, what i mentioned is not really a monopoly of women drivers. i am pretty positive that if we do check out violations as issued by the traffic police (assuming they do issue tickets), i would daresay it would end up as an even score between genders. it may be a different matter if we go with drivers for yellow plated and regular plated vehicles. wonder if we can in fact get some actual data from the government for this. hmmm
what i am trying to drive at is that there is really no such thing as a “lady” driver or a “man” driver but more like a good and disciplined driver and bad driver. that’s all there is to it.
