respecting the centavos

recently, at a fastfood shop, i witnessed one behaviour that just bothered me as i thought it was a sign of how most of us take money for granted.

a young couple came in, probably in their twenties with the girl proceeding to the counter to order and the guy electing to sit. while the girl was paying for her order, she dropped a 25 centavo coin on the floor. she motioned to her companion to pick up the coin. the guy replied by simply shaking his head. and with that, the girl just went on and joined the guy at their seat.

scenes like this are not uncommon. we see coins lying around and just let them be, not wanting to be bothered with picking up a measly coin.

such was the case on this particular evening. what had disgusted me was how nonchalant the attitude was towards the dropping of the coin. they were not in a hurry. they did not look exactly like they were wallowing in cash either.  if they had not wanted it, there were 2 cans for some charity causes right in front of the cashier.

a lot of us could still grow to be financially literate. and that starts from understanding that having 75 centavos will not exactly amount to 1 peso if you don’t have that 25 centavos.
