dealing with email scams

for those of us who have been online for quite some time now, getting email scams and hearing about hoaxes is nothing new.  spammers and scammers are a creative bunch. we do have to give them credit for that. but we should be equally, if not more creative as well in dealing with them, lest they run off with our hard-earned cash and properties.
a snippet of an email scam i received recently sent through a friend’s hacked account

here is what i normally do when i receive a suspicious email.
 1. google it! or check snopes.com or any other hoax and scam debunker sites.
     information is power.
 2. check with the sender (through another email account or via phone) for any dubious email.
if you find an email suspicious, it probably is.
check personally with the email account owner  through some other contact  like another email or via phone if they did send an email related to the subject.
owners of hacked accounts would not know until someone tells them so.
3. delete the email.
nothing more powerful than not seeing that email scam again 🙂
as in most cases, scammers prey on the inability of people to deal with shock and overwhelming concern for loved ones and friends OR on the belief in getting rich quick without working for it.
thinking before acting on something generally works.
