road to somewhere

traveling always gives  me the time to reset and/or readjust my views.

i had such a chance when my family recently went to el nido, palawan.
the road to el nido is long ( roughly 4-6 hours depending on your transportation mode), winding and not always smoothly paved.

such long trips, especially on cramped accommodations like a van just forces you to either take a long nap until the next stopover, or look at the passing scenery or do some idle chit-chats.

it was more of the latter for me on the road back. we went past verdant mountains and rice fields and stone walls and small human settlements. it was just amazing how Palawan was relatively untouched by human progress, save for the existence of the paved roads.

what had really caught my eye though was seeing young children walk their way to school which was a few kilometers a way. we live in a very competitive world wherein education is a vital key for one to get ahead. these children are already disadvantaged. the schools they go to are not as well equipped nor staffed as the ones in the urban areas. it is so easy for them to give up just going to school altogether, with most likely a meager breakfast to fuel them to their schools and the long walk needed just to get there.

but i admire the said children for continuing on, with happy faces to boot.
because like me, they see their road as a road to somewhere.
if only people will take the time to give the children free rides to encourage them all the more.
if only the government will ensure that we do provide quality education to those in the remote areas.

an educated filipino will serve a prosperous Philippines soon enough.
an educated filipino will love the Philippines enough to ensure there is more resources to share for the future Filipinos yet to be born.
