my first 10k run

02 october 2011
the 35th National Milo Marathon 2011 is just the 2nd race I have officially joined, the 1st being the Cebu Marathon 2011 earlier this January. Not that I have illusions of winning ๐Ÿ™‚ it was really about pushing myself to try new things. instead of the 5k though, nolan and i opted to run the 10k. it was only later when i learned that runners failing to meet the cut off time of 1 hr 30 mins are going to be swept. oh dear, what had i gotten into!ย

for the past weeks, i have been working crazy hours with an average of 4 hours of sleep per day. so in between that, we tried squeezing some practice runs. and i never did manage to finish a 10k run. the closest i got was 9.7 km and my time then was going to mean i am going to the finish line with the marshalls!ย

but i did survive! my time was slow but it was 7 minutes off the cut-off ๐Ÿ™‚ and i was just happy to finish the race. they changed the running route so instead of the mental map of what time i should be in a specific place, i had to improvise. i just kept on running and walking and looking for the water stations ๐Ÿ˜‰ ย one other good thing about this was that i got reacquainted with the streets of cebu. and, after the run, i got to ride the jeepney again!

lessons learned/reinforced in today’s race:ย

* just keep putting your foot forward. pretty soon you will be at the finish line.ย
* your mind is stronger than your body. but do listen to what your body is saying.ย
* it is never too late to start running ๐Ÿ™‚ย
