Musings

and the fun run craze hits me :)

09 January 2011.
waking up to the alarm at 3am was harder that i thought. nope, it was not an early flight that had me setting my alarm to this ungodly hour. it was to be my very first ever fun run at 5k. i have always wondered what it was about running that have a lot of people all agog over it.
wanting to start the year with the right athletic frame of mind (and in the process loose the holiday poundage), it looked like the Cebu City Marathon was the perfect event to join. the kicker to joining was of course the free New Balance shirt for the first 4500 registrants 🙂
the early morning 5k run resulted in a few surprises. i realized that running with the crowd made it easier for me to push myself to go faster and longer. whereas doing a 5k run around the Abellana oval was often  laborious but mind-clearing, joining the fun run was altogether fun!
doing the run also made me give a few more respectful nods to the runners. from what i have seen, it is usually a case of trying to beat your own time as evidenced by how the runners often check their watches to see how they are doing. it also takes a really disciplined individual to wake up in the “really” wee hours of the morning, imho 🙂
watching a friend cross the finish line for his first ever marathon made me think if this was something that i could also hope to achieve. i still am vacillating between my love for my duvet and being able to cross out a do a marathon in my lifetime to do list. 5K is after just a 30-40 minute run. a 42k means a couple of hours of serious running 🙂  let’s wait and see though if the running bug does catch me.
with my running mate 🙂

and this was the crowd ahead of us.

thumbs up for me! i finished and beat my record at that 🙂
