making it fit

we have often heard of how we should be treating our (human) resources as our number one asset. and it is true. of course, getting the right resources is an altogether different matter and deserves worthy of a separate dissertation.

most projects are staffed based on required skillset as dictated by the technology to be used to solve a problem. at extreme cases, experience for a required technology is not even there. things are bound to be studied and used on the fly.  seldom do we consider in part the working attitudes of our team.

i am bound to liken a project to a jigsaw puzzle. at the start, we only have the picture of the puzzle to solve to work with and the pieces of the puzzle all conveniently jumbled to make it all the more interesting.

when solving puzzles, most would first sort the pieces by color or pattern. part of the pattern would be determining the edge pieces. after this is done, we refer to the “picture” to guide us in our quest to fit things altogether. and finally get that picture hanging on the wall.

there are going to be times when pieces look like they fit but closer inspection would tell a different story. so we go for the right fit.

the same is true with project resources.

a team with stellar performers is not an insurance of project success. each team member would have to be able to work together in order to deliver what is expected.  the project does not lie on one person alone (unless of course you are a one-man team ).

the challenge is getting the best fits in place despite the different skills, personalities that can come together in a project.
