Musings

of migraines and vertigo

no matter how much you avoid it, you will get to know how one is feeling or what they are experiencing. especially if you are on FB or twitter of any other social networking tool that allows you to post updates.

it is not really that which irritates (or putting it mildly: bothers) me. it is how some people have the propensity to magnify what they are feeling. is it a case of just begging for attention? this need to make things worse than they really are?

my current peeve is how people so loosely associate headache with migraine or vertigo for a short fainting spell.
some people tweet about having a migraine but almost too soon, their next tweet (or activity for that matter) belie their situation. come on, you have a migraine but still be able to play on FB or comment on those who comment on your status? 🙂

i have a couple of friends who genuinely suffer from migraine and i have seen some of them up close when suffering from it. as documentation would suggest, the attack would normally range from 4 hours to 72 hours, usually with a throbbing headache in only one side of the head. the migraine sufferer would also have bouts with nausea, vomiting, increased sensitivity to light (aka photophobia) and increase sensitivity to sound (aka phonophobia).  it is even reported that some sufferers report perceiving aura before an attack.

so yes, you may have a splitting headache, a throbbing tick in your head that it is bothering you but please, do not loosely say you already have a migraine. that is just an insult to the millions who suffer regularly from migraine attack.

other than using “migraine” as a convenient excuse, some people have taken to using the term “vertigo” to mean they are not feeling well, that the room is indeed spinning (perhaps due to lack of sleep).  i suffered from vertigo and believe me, it is not as easy as that. yes, the world spins around you, so fast that even when you close your eyes, you can still feel it moving. and yes, a bedpan would be your best friend when you are having a vertigo attack. what with the nausea and the vomiting bout you are most likely to be engaged in.

i guess, my point is that if you have a migraine or vertigo attack, you would not be able to engage in anything that will require focus and concentration. the simple act of reading or listening would be very difficult to say the very least.

as they say. be very careful what you wish for. it just might come true.
