asking for a raise

how do we in fact ask for a (salary) raise in the PH?

we do have the labor unions organizing rallies to press for an increase in the daily wage but i have yet to see the other working sector go to the streets to do this. oops, with the exception of the public school teachers i suppose.

is it a matter of changing jobs (i.e. companies) in the hope of getting a higher salary and better benefits?

in my more than a decade of working in the IT industry, i have seen people leave because they managed to get higher-paying jobs. never mind that they have to relocate. it seems that the relocation added a spice of adventure in this case. for those who chose to stay, they relied on performance evaluations to be able to get the annual salary increases. sadly, the increases sometimes do not even cover for inflation. there were cases where an open-forum brought about issues related to salaries forward but there was never a clear demand for the increase. just “suggestions” which where either ignored or simply discarded. 🙂

i have not heard of someone (i actually know) marching up to the bosses and asking for an increase. or hearing of someone getting fired because of it (as foreign comics) would suggest. hehe

is this an asian thing? or is my world just so culturally isolated that i have not seen this? or was i just under the radar then with respect to office gossip? 🙂

in any case, managers (esp. foreigners or western-thinking bosses) may need to be more attuned to how we feel (about salaries & benefits). that we may not always be assertive to say what we want and that we have this tendency of spreading this using a proxy or sending out feelers. and if the feelers or proxy do not make any headway, we simply look for other opportunities.
